Bong Joon-ho wants to make an ‘Alien’ musical: “I’m not drawn to franchise films but…”
Mickey 17 and Parasite director Bong Joon-ho has said he would be open to making an Alien musical.
Speaking in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, when asked about working on a blockbuster franchise like Star Wars or James Bond, he said: “I’m not drawn to franchise films, but I did think at one point that I would like to do an Alien film.”
He then added: “An Alien musical.”
The most recent movie in the long running franchise was Alien: Romulus, which was released last year and directed by Fede Álvarez. The film, which is set between the first two Alien films, featured highly in NME’s 20 Best Films of 2024.

NME’s five-star review described it as being “as thrilling and scary as the original”, and “a movie that comes close to the brilliance of Ridley Scott and James Cameron”.
A forthcoming TV series – Alien: Earth, which is set two years before the events of the original 1979 film Alien is also set to drop later this year on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK.
Meanwhile, Bong’s latest movie Mickey 17, which stars Robert Pattinson, is released in cinemas today (March 7).
The film, which is an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7, sees Pattinson play Mickey Barnes, a man who signs up to be an “expendable”, a human that can regenerate after death, but finds multiple versions of himself confronting each other after a space expedition goes wrong. The film also stars Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.
In a four star review, NME said “Bong Joon-ho’s oddball sci-fi satire is out of this world”, adding: “There’s an infectious warmth to proceedings that makes you stick with Mickey 17 (and 18) through thick and thin. This kooky curio is well worth seeking out.”
