‘Borderlands 4′ doing “whatever we can’ to show game to terminally ill fan

The team behind Borderlands are doing everything in their power to show the upcoming Borderlands 4 to a terminally ill fan.

Back in July, the makers of Borderlands hinted that fans wouldn’t have long to wait for the sequel to 2019’s Borderlands 3 and in August, it was confirmed that Borderlands 4 would be releasing at some point in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

However, that might not be soon enough for one fan. Earlier this week, Caleb McAlpine took to the Borderlands subreddit to try and get in contact with the developers after being diagnosed with “late stage four terminal cancer.” McAlpine has been given between seven and 12 months to live. “IF chemo works to slow the progression of the cancer, I still have less than two years,” he explained.

“So I am a die hard Borderlands fan and don’t know if I will be around for Borderlands 4. Is there anyone that knows how to get in touch with gearbox to see if there is a way to play the game early? Long shot but I thought I would try.”

In just a few days, the post has been viewed over two million times and caught the attention of Borderlands streamer Ki11er Six, who passed the request to developers Gearbox. Hours later, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford took to X to thank fans for making him aware of McAlpine’s request. “Thanks everyone who reached out to point me to this. Caleb and I are now chatting via e-mail and we’re going to do whatever we can to make something happen.”

Fans have also donated over £5000 to go towards MacAlpine’s medical expenses.

In 2011, a 22-year-old Borderlands fan passed away and their friend asked Gearbox if the character Claptrap could read a eulogy. Developers went one better, and created the  Michael Mamaril Borderlands 2 NPC as a tribute to the fan.

In other news, Roblox has been forced to remove a hotdog costume from its hugely popular Dress To Impress game after a few players made it NSFW.
