Can you play Helldivers 2 on PC without a PSN account? After a recent announcement by Arrowhead Game Studios, PC players will be required to sign up for a PSN account in order to play the hit game – despite not needing a Sony account for several months.
Now many PC players are in revolt about the sudden change after having invested dozens of hours into the shooter. But do you need a PSN account right now or is there a grace period? Here are the details.
Can you play ‘Helldivers 2’ on PC without a PSN account?
You can play Helldivers 2 on PC without a PSN account until May 6, 2024. At this point, all new players will be required to connect their Steam account to a PSN account. Existing players can play without a PSN account until June 4, 2024. At this point, they will be required to link their Steam account and a PSN account.
The prompt will be shown in-game for existing players a little sooner on May 30, 2024. But it won’t become mandatory to link the accounts until June 4.
Arrowhead cited the initial grace period so far as having been in place due to the game’s technical issues at launch. Now the vast majority of those issues have been fixed it is aiming to implement the account linking feature quickly. In a statement on Steam, the developer said:
“Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games. This is our main way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling the banning of players that engage in that type of behaviour. It also allows those players that have been banned the right to appeal.”
Thankfully, setting up a PSN account takes a matter of minutes. You can set one up here if you haven’t already. However, this isn’t ideal for PC players who don’t want or need a PSN account – or feel betrayed by suddenly needing to sign up for Sony’s service.
