Cardi B Cautions Fans Not To Expect Megan Thee Stallion ‘Bongos’ Collab to Be ‘WAP’ Pt. 2: ‘It’s a Different Theme’
Cardi B sat down with DJ Whoo Kid for an upcoming episode of his Whoo’s House podcast and the two dove right into the details behind Cardi’s upcoming collab with Megan Thee Stallion, “Bongos.” When Whoo Kid said he’d read that the lyrics to the song might out-raunch the XXX lines the pair served up on their hit single “WAP,” Cardi cautioned that fans should not expect the track — which drops on Friday (Sept. 8) — to be a straight sequel to the 2020 smash that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“I wonder how people are gonna react to this vibe because they’re really like expecting ‘WAP,’ like, ‘oh, here they go again talking this and that,'” Cardi said of the whispers she’s hearing from fans about what the song might sound like. “We are talking a little, you know, about some p—y, but not like ‘WAP’ type of stuff,” she promised, noting that she recently got hired to perform at a billionaire’s party in Cancun for “white soccer moms” and their kids, who all love “WAP.”
The Whoo Kid video was briefly public, but appeared to be private at press time.
The DJ also wondered what the “Bongos” video would look like — given the wild “WAP” visuals — and Cardi assured him that it is “beautiful.” She also teased that the sound of the song would likely “throw people off… because the [single] cover [image] gives off like a ‘WAP’ vibe, but it’s not,” Cardi said of the two cover images released so far in which the women rock rainbow-colored hair and skimpy outfits while straddling each other.
“It’s a different theme and the video is like a whole complete different type of theme,” Cardi added about the “intricate… beautiful” video that will drop along with the song. Cardi also said that when she and Megan collaborate it’s not just an easy, casual thing. “We put in our sweat and everything,” she said. “It’s like on some ‘b—h, you jump, I jump… if you wit it, I I wit it. We’re gonna do it.’ We worked so hard on the music video. You’re gonna see… that’s thought put into that.”
Describing the creation of the track, Cardi said there were suggestions that they should “go the Spanish route” and have a Latin singer or rapper as the feature, but she knew Meg was the one to complete it. “‘I hear her on this, I know it,'” she said. “And when she sent her verse, I just looked at n—as like…”
Momentarily distracted by “Mr. Boombastic” Shaggy walking through her eye line, Cardi also addressed Whoo Kid’s question about whether working on the song was a nice break for the women, who he noted both had major public dramas over the past few years; Cardi and Offset recently addressed rumors of infidelity in their marriage on the song “Jealousy,” and Megan testified in the Tory Lanez’s trial in which he was convicted for shooting Meg in the foot after a party in July 2020.
“It feels good [to get back into the game]… it makes me feel good that she trusts me,” Cardi said of Megan. “I’mma give my all. Not only am I doing this for myself, [but] ‘I want you to trust me.’ We trust each other.”
When Whoo Kid asked Cardi what her “secret” was to “combing [back] from two babies,” the proud mother of two with Migos rapper Offset said there wasn’t one. “I ain’t got no secret… my mama?,” she laughed. “Just, just be!” And when Whoo asked if Cardi had been hitting the gym with a “specialist” or a trainer, the rapper said it was nothing like that.
“No, no, no honey. I did get me some good old lipo, though,” said Cardi, who revealed that she’s a “naturally” very skinny person who tends to lose weight really fast because of her “bad” appetite. “Not really because of my stomach, I just wanted to have a little more hips. And my butt got too big, so I needed to, like, proportion it.”
Whoo Kid tried to pry some details from Cardi about her long-awaited upcoming follow-up to smash 2018 full-length debut album Invasion of Privacy. And while she said she has a title and release date in mind — not her birthday month of October, so chill — she’s keeping the details under wraps for now. In a recent interview with Vogue Mexico, Cardi teased, “I’m not going to release any more collaborations. I’m going to put out my next solo single. Right now, I’m working on the cover art and ideas for the next record because it’s definitely coming up.”
Also, near the end of the interview, when Whoo promised that “Bongos” would be played “at least 80 times” on Eminem’s Shade 45 SiriusXM channel on release day, Cardi used the opportunity to made a bid for her Slim Shady shot.
“I love him,” Cardi said of Marshall while Whoo Kid hyped the idea of a collaboration happening. “Not even on some music s–t. I just really want to tell him, like, ‘I love you.. you’re amazing, like you’re so sickening.'”
