‘Carrie’ TV series in the works from Stephen King specialist Mike Flanagan
Acclaimed horror director Mike Flanagan has been tapped to helm a new TV adaptation of Stephen King‘s Carrie.
According to reports from Variety, Flanagan will lead the eight-episode series for Amazon Prime Video, which has yet to receive a release date. Flanagan – who has in the past worked on several other King adaptations – will also co-write and executive produce.
Deadline Hollywood has also reported that a writer’s room has already been opened for the adaptation, suggesting that production could begin soon. A cast has yet to be attached to the project.
Carrie will be Flanagan’s latest adaptation of a Stephen King project, having in the past directed Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game and most recently The Life Of Chuck.
Carrie, King’s first published novel, tells the story of a bullied and friendless high school girl who discovers she has telekinetic powers. It was first adapted for the screen in 1976 with actor Sissy Spacek as the eponymous lead, who’s famously doused in pig’s blood at her school dance.
The 1976 film received a failed sequel in 1999 titled The Rage: Carrie 2 and a 2013 remake that starred Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.
The upcoming TV series also marks the latest King novel to be picked up for adaptation. The Long Walk, which King published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, is being developed at Lionsgate with Francis Lawrence, while Jack Bender is directing The Institute and Edgar Wright is directing a new version of The Running Man with Glen Powell.
Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep scored a four-star review from Alex Flood, who wrote for NME: “For the most part, Doctor Sleep is a thrilling, nostalgia-fuelled ride that does its best to appease fans of the original, as well as those brought up on newer King flicks like Pet Sematary and It: Chapter Two… Doctor Sleep is a ripping yarn, no doubt, but it never quite steps out of its big brother’s shadow.”
