Cha Eun-woo opens up about death of ASTRO bandmate Moonbin: “Last year was a very difficult year for me”
ASTRO singer Cha Eun-woo has opened up about the passing of his bandmate Moonbin.
ASTRO’s Cha Eun-woo recently made an appearance on the South Korean talk show You Quiz on the Block, where he opened up about the death of bandmate Moonbin, who passed in April 2023.
“Last year was a very difficult year for me,” the singer-actor told hosts Yu Jae-seok and Cho Sae-ho, per SBS Star, revealing that he wrote ‘Entity’ because he “desperately wanted to express what was truly on my mind”.
“I wrote the lyrics after days and nights of shooting, recording, trying to channel Moonbin’s perspective,” he added. “People tend to forget too easily. That’s just really upsetting to think about. I believed that by writing about him, it would help keep his memory alive for a longer period of time.”
Cha Eun-woo later spoke about why he took up the role in the K-drama Wonderful World, revealing that his character of Sun-yool had “reminded me of Moonbin”.
“I felt a connection to Sun-yool… his backstory struck a chord with me,” he added. “I felt that I needed to pull myself together and work hard so that my world wouldn’t collapse. Although my agency said I could take a break, I ended up doing Wonderful World because I wanted to.”
The singer also spoke about how the final line from Wonderful World – “May the world be more peaceful and affectionate to those who have the pain of loss” – had “really resonated” with him. “I know this is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life, so I’ll strive harder. I’ll live well, for Moonbin’s sake,” he added.
Last month, ASTRO’s JinJin has released a new song titled ‘Fly’, featuring vocals from Moonbin. He dropped the song on April 19, the anniversary of Moonbin’s death.
