Chappell Roan Looks Back on Her ‘Long’ Road to Winning Top New Artist at the 2024 BBMAs
After a year of dominating some of music’s biggest stages and climbing up the Billboard charts, pop femininomenon Chappell Roan capped off 2024 with her first-ever win at the Billboard Music Awards on Thursday (Dec. 12).
Accepting her trophy for Top New Artist via video, Roan thanked Billboard for the prize, reflecting on her big year. “Thank you, Billboard, for naming me your Top New Artist of 2024, this is so awesome,” she said with a laugh. “You’ve really been so supportive and put not just one song, but multiple songs on the Billboard charts.”
The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer added that she still felt a bit baffled by the “new” label, considering she’s been making music since 2015. “This has taken a long time to be a new artist, but it’s awesome to be recognized,” she said. “All these years of hard work are truly paying off, so thank you for being a part of that.”
With her Top New Artist win, Roan succeeded over fellow finalists Shaboozey, Teddy Swims, Tommy Richman and Benson Boone. Meanwhile, Roan was also a finalist in the Top Female Artist category, alongside fellow pop stars Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, SZA and Sabrina Carpenter.
The new trophy is just one of Roan’s massive accomplishments for 2024 — throughout the year, the “Hot to Go!” singer charted seven songs on the Hot 100, brought her 2023 album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess to No. 2 on the Billboard 200, broke attendance records at Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits and scored a whopping six Grammy nominations, including one in each of the Big Four categories.
The Billboard Music Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by Penske Media Corporation. PMC is also the parent company of Billboard.
