Is Chappell Roan’s pop music’s next big sensation? The singer-songwriter has skyrocketed to pop stardom over the past year, but Chappell has been working towards this moment since she was a teenager. So who is Chappell Roan? What’s her story? And how did she make her way to the charts? This is Billboard Explains Chappell Roan’s Rise To Pop Stardom. Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, she adopted the name Chappell Roan in honor of her late grandfather Dennis Chappell and his favorite song “The Strawberry Roan” by Marty Robbins. Hailing from Willard, Missouri, Chappell started uploading covers to YouTube as a teenager. At 16, she wrote her original song “Die Young” and was signed to Atlantic Records at 17. She released her first EP School Nights in 2017, and then dropped “Pink Pony Club” in 2020. Unfortunately, her label didn’t think she was a profitable artist and she was dropped. Fast forward to October 2023, where Chappell made her Billboard chart debut jumping onto the emerging artists chart at No. 8. She later went on to be No. 1 for three weeks on the same chart beginning in May 2024. Chappell’s gradual rise to the big time also played out for her debut studio album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. While it was released in September 2023, it didn’t enter the Billboard 200 until it debuted at No. 127 in April 2024 following her iconic Coachella performance and opening for Olivia Rodrigo on her Guts Tour.
