Chris Evans has confirmed he is returning to the Marvel franchise for the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

It comes after Robert Downey Jr. also recently revealed that he will be appearing as Dr Doom in the film.

Downey Jr. had previously been part of the franchise as Iron Man, starting in 2008 with the titular film. He starred in 10 other movies before exiting after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Evans also exited the franchise at the same time.

The directors of the latter – the Russo brothers – are also returning to the franchise for the new Avengers film, which has a release date of May 1, 2026. It is unclear what role Evans will play although he did recently make an appearance as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Asked whether he could be tempted to return to the Captain America/Steve Rogers character, Evans previously said last year: “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of.

“And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing. So, no time soon.”

Speaking about his appearance as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch more recently, Evans said: “The chance to be Johnny again, I couldn’t pass up. I loved it. It was fun to shoot, fun to watch, all of it.”

It was recently revealed that Downey Jr. turned down a cameo as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Deadpool & Wolverine.

The scene in question was near the beginning of the film. Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) used Cable’s time machine to jump over to The Sacred Timeline in order to try and become one of the Avengers. Deadpool has a meeting with Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), who rejects him because he is too self-centred for the Avengers. The writers wanted Downey Jr in the room for that scene, but kept it as it still worked without him.
