Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry shares charged new single ‘Something In The Air’ ahead of debut solo album ‘Vicious Creature’
Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry has shared her latest single called ‘Something In The Air’, ahead of the release of her debut solo album ‘Vicious Creature’.
The Scottish singer-songwriter’s new track arrives after she previewed the song at a live show in the US last month, and follows singles ‘Are You Awake?’, ‘Shame’ and ‘Change Shapes’.
Debuting last night (October 1) as BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record in the World, the single is pulled from her anticipated debut solo record, which is due for release later this year.
The new track sees Mayberry confronting someone who comes up with “stories” and “conspiracy theories“, before declaring in the anthemic chorus that she just wants to be “someone who’s happy“, asking: “But why do you even carе? / Must be something in the air.”
Listen to ‘Something In The Air’ below.
“Something In The Air is a song that really came out of nowhere,” Mayberry shared in a press statement about the new track. “I was in London finishing another song with my friend, co-writer and producer Dan McDougall. We were taking a break in the shared kitchen in the studio complex when a pretty iconic British musician, who I won’t throw under the bus here, came in and started making conversation about electricity, 5G and how it’s making us all sick.
“Dan and I went for a walk around the block before going back to the studio and were unpacking those theories, and why people want to believe them – and the chorus lyric just appeared.”
According to press materials, the new record will see the Chvrches frontwoman write about “sexuality and empowerment from a profoundly personal perspective for the very first time”, while reconnecting with the music of her youth like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey and Kathleen Hanna, along with the influences of ’90s British girl groups like All Saints and Sugababes.
Speaking to NME last year, Mayberry said that her new material was “born out of things that I couldn’t or wouldn’t write in the band”.
“The worst writing sessions were when I went in with someone who didn’t really understand what I was talking about and we would just write a sort of shit Chvrches song,” she said.
Upon announcing her solo endeavour last year, she shared her hopes that her music would be a “fun, freaky, sad, weird, joyful pop playground”.
Later this year, Mayberry will perform as opening support for London Grammar on their 2024 UK and European tour.
