CNN’s ‘Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom’: See 2023 Performance Photos of Nelly, Chloe Bailey & More

For a second year, CNN saluted the annual Juneteenth holiday by presenting “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom.” Airing on both CNN and OWN, the live concert telecast was staged at Los Angeles venue the Greek Theatre and boasted an array of music stars and presenters.

The performer lineup included Charlie Wilson, Nelly, Miguel, Kirk Franklin, SWV, Chlöe Bailey, Coi Leray, Jodeci, Davido, Big Freedia and saxophonist Mike Phillips. Among the evening’s presenters: Muni Long, Saweetie and Vice President Kamala Harris, who made a special appearance onstage to share a few remarks about the occasion.

Promising “to be an unforgettable event that pays homage to the past, celebrates the present and looks forward to a future filled with unity and equality,” the three-hour show — helmed by musical directors Adam Blackstone and Roots co-founder Ahmir “Questlove” Love — did just that. Among the evening’s generational highlights: Bailey paying tribute to Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock & Roll, by performing the late artist’s signature song “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” Bailey also teamed up with Nelly for a crowd-pleasing take on his 2002 hit with Kelly Rowland, “Dilemma.”

Franklin opened the festivities with a rousing performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Additional highlights included Miguel (“Sure Thing”), SWV (hits medley including “Weak”), Nelly (“Ride Wit Me,” “Hot in Herre”) and show closer Charlie Wilson (“Outstanding, “Yearning for Your Love,” “My Name Is Charlie”).

Bookending the show were one-hour pre- and post-shows. Opal Lee, “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” and her granddaughter Dione Sims were among the featured pre-show guests. The evening was hosted by CNN anchor Sara Sidner, political commentator Van Jones and correspondent Stephanie Elam.
