Coldplay musical guest booed in Romania for singing manele
A musical guest at Coldplay’s Romania gig this week was booed for singing manele.
The group, who are due to headline Glastonbury later this month, invited Romanian manele singer Babasha to perform alongside Chris Martin during their first concert in Bucharest on June 12.
However, the moment was met with boos from the audience and was followed by much controversy afterwards. Manele is a controversial music genre in Romania because some of the content of the songs can have negative connotations.
Before inviting him on stage, Coldplay’s Martin said he chose him after hearing him sing on the street recently.
“When I landed yesterday, well, two days ago, I wandered the streets and heard this man singing so beautifully on the street. Then I looked at the music charts in Romania and was impressed because there are so many wonderful artists. Maybe you don’t understand what kind of people you have in Romania, it’s incredible,” said Martin (via Digi24).
During the boos, Martin continued to sing alongside him and encouraged him.

Așadar, pe la jumătatea concertului, când energia era la ceruri, Chris Martin a ținut un scurt discurs amical-admirativ pentru artiștii români, în care a spus, în esență, că este pe cale să aducă pe scenă un artist român din noua generație, care este foarte bun. I-a spus și pe nume – Babasha.A intrat acest tânăr, care nu cred c-a fost recunoscut de mai nimeni, pentru că aplauzele de întâmpinare au fost formale. El a spus că are o piesă în trending pe Youtube și că vrea să cânte ceva ce crede c-o să fie recunoscut de public, după care a început să cânte, acompaniat de Chris Martin la pian. Vreun minut, publicul a tăcut, apoi a venit un prim val de fluierături și huiduieli (min. 1.15), cu un reflux, apoi al doilea val, uriaș (min. 2.50). Cred că majoritatea spectatorilor huiduiau și fluierau din toate puterile, cu pasiune și intensitate – știți, genul acela de protest care se manifestă pe stadion când Naționala mănâncă bătaie cu 4-0 și fotbaliștii se-mpiedică unul de celălalt ca niște găini cu capetele tăiate. Huiduielile acelea de cerut nu doar demisia selecționerului, ci și să plece toți acasă, că prea e umilința mare.Publicul este o fiară cu zeci de mii de colți și gheare, nu știi niciodată când se oprește din tors și te face harcea-parcea.Momentul s-a terminat cu stingerea luminilor și plecarea artiștilor de pe scenă în întuneric. A fost o pauză scurtă, după care trupa și-a reluat concertul, dar interacțiunea lui Chris Martin cu publicul s-a oprit… câteva piese, poate 3, poate 4. Dup-aia vibe-ul a început să urce din nou și spectacolul a redevenit magic. Dar cred că lui Chris Martin și echipei lui le-au explodat capetele. Ce să înțeleagă? În fond, artistul pe care l-au adus pe scenă e foarte popular – e în trending, nu? are zeci de milioane de vizualizări pe piesele lui – și toată lumea ascultă manele în România, se știe. În plus, au mai fost maneliști la festivaluri și publicul a cântat cu ei, i-a ovaționat, la propriu – Adi Minune la Neversea, Gheboasă la Untold șamd. Deci de ce n-a mers de data asta?De ce a fost o asemenea revărsare de ură și dispreț la Babasha? Dacă pe scenă urca Sofia Vicoveanca, era la fel?Atunci suntem niște rasiști ipocriți? Dar huiduielile au avut legătură cu genul muzical, cu etnia, cu artistul?Dacă pe scenă urca Damian Drăghici cu trupa lui, erau aceleași huiduieli? A fost piesa problema?Dacă venea Adi Minune cu Of, viața mea! – tot așa ieșea?Dar dacă la un concert de manele urca Iris pe scenă, ce urma?Ce s-a întâmplat acolo?

Babasha later reacted after the concert on his social media. He said in a video: “I don’t want people to think I’m taking advantage of this, and I’m not in a position to talk about such things, I leave it to people to judge the situation as they see fit.”
“But what I must say is that Coldplay wanted to have a moment with a Romanian artist for their concert […], and they looked at the music charts and saw me. They personally contacted my agents, I suddenly found myself in this situation, and I don’t know how many of you would have refused such an opportunity. Because we’re talking about a completely different level, and regardless of all the boos in the world, I still would have accepted because something like this is once in a lifetime,” he added.
In other news, Coldplay have begun teasing their brand new single ‘feelslikeimfallinginlove’, the first song from their upcoming album ‘Moon Music’.
The band first started teasing their return to music on June 7, where they shared a sped-up snippet of the song to Instagram with the caption: “first time”.
Now, Coldplay have officially announced the song’s title as ‘feelslikeimfallinginlove’, where they took to X/Twitter to share the news. There, they posted a picture of the song title in front of a holographic moon against a teal background, also writing ‘June 21’ – implied to be the song’s release date.
In snippets Coldplay have shared, fans can hear the following lyrics: “It feels like I’m falling in love / Maybe for the first time / Baby, it’s in my mind / You blow / It feels like I’m falling in love / You’re throwing me a lifeline / This is for a lifetime / I know“.
‘feelslikeimfallinginlove’ will be the first song to be released from Coldplay’s 10th studio album, ‘Moon Music’, which they said was “nearly finished” at the beginning of this year.
The band are due to headline Glastonbury Festival later this month, when they will become the first act ever to top the Pyramid Stage bill five times, after their slots in 2002, 2005, 2011 and 2016.

Last week, Coldplay shared an update on the sustainability initiatives they have been implementing on their ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour. They said the tour had generated 59 per cent less CO2 emissions than their previous stadium tour in 2016 and 2017, beating their own target of 50 per cent.
It has also been revealed that 7million trees have been planted globally thanks to the success of the live shows. This comes as a result of the band promising to have one tree planted for every person who attends the tour.
