The grave of director David Lynch has been revealed by his daughter Jennifer, with a mysterious epitaph worthy of his filmmaking reputation.

Lynch, the visionary known for the TV show Twin Peaks and films such as Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead, passed away at his daughter’s home in Los Angeles in January, after being evacuated during the city’s wild fires. He was 78.

In a post on her Instagram account, Jennifer Lynch shared a photo of his gravestone, which read “David Keith Lynch” with the epitaph “Night Blooming Jasmine”.

She shared the picture with the caption: “Dad is at rest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Visit when you can. I will be”.

It’s not known exactly what Night Blooming Jasmine may refer to, but some fans online have pointed to the director’s affection for the plant (also known as Lady Of The Night) in previous posts and interviews.

One user on X shared a clip from one of Lynch’s weather reports, which he shared during the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2021, where he said: “Now, the days are gonna start getting longer, and spring time is right around the corner. When, at least in LA, that night blooming jasmine will once again fill the air with its sublime fragrance”.

A Reddit poster pointed to an interview from 2016, where he talked about the “DNA” of the city of Los Angeles: “If you smell that night blooming jasmine, you can almost see Clark Cable or Gloria Swanson”.

David Lynch has been thinking about that "night-blooming jasmine" AKA Wisteria for a while now, and relates it to the smell of Old Hollywood.

Recently, Lynch collaborator and close friend Naomi Watts talked about the last time she saw the filmmaker, revealing that he was still planning future projects prior to his passing when they last spoke. “He was not, in any way, done” she said. “I could see the creative spirit alive in him”.
