‘Devil May Cry’ fans “cautiously optimistic” about new Netflix series
Netflix has shared the first full trailer for its upcoming Devil May Cry adaptation – and fans have been left feeling “cautiously optimistic”
Urban fantasy game Devil May Cry was first released in 2001 and went on to inspire a number of sequels, with the most recent being 2019’s Devil May Cry 5. The series is heavily inspired by Dante’s epic poem The Divine Comedy while the original game was based on a scrapped idea for Resident Evil 4 and follows demon hunter Dante as he battles various beasties who are trying to invade earth.
Announced back in 2018, Netflix’s animated adaptation of the game is due out next month and takes heavy inspiration from 2005 prequel game Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening. Creators shared the Limp Bizkit-soundtracked opening credits earlier this year, but now the full trailer has been released, soundtracked by Papa Roach’s ‘Last Resort’.
“Animation looks cool. The intro they dropped was neat. The song they chose had to grow on me a bit. Didn’t really fit the vibe I was getting from the animation. All in all, cautiously optimistic,” wrote one fan on Reddit.
“I really hope this is good. It would make for such fantastic anime if done well,” said another while a third admitted they were wary. “It feels like they’re trying to cram too much into a single season. There’s some pretty iconic demons in this trailer alone and trying to fit them ALL into 8 episodes? That’s asking a lot…”
Speaking about the nu-metal heavy soundtrack, series creator Adi Shankar said: “My Devil May Cry universe is set in a late ’90s/early 2000s PS2 era of the world. It’s not set in modern times. It’s set in my memory of the world, pre- and post-9/11. My music choices reflect this.” He went on to say the soundtrack will feature hits from that era as well as reimagined cuts from the gaming franchise. ”You are not prepared for this soundtrack. Anime is not prepared for this soundtrack.“
Devil May Cry launches on Netflix April 3. “In this animated adaptation of the popular Capcom game and from the vision of Adi Shankar, sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck,” reads the official synopsis.
In other news, gamers have taken to Reddit to share their controversial gaming opinions and it seems almost everyone hates crafting.
