Documentary about the Log Lady from ‘Twin Peaks’ set for Hollywood premiere
A documentary about the iconic Log Lady in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks is set to receive its Hollywood premiere this month.
I Know Catherine, The Log Lady will tell the story of the life of Catherine Coulson, the actress who portrayed the mysterious, elusive character. The film has been in the works since 2018 and is directed by Richard Green, who himself appeared in Lynch’s 2001 opus Mulholland Drive.
The documentary will screen on April 17 as the closing film of the American Cinematheque’s This Is Not A Fiction Film Festival, before a pair of screenings at New York’s IFC Center on May 1 and 4. It will also have a weeklong run in Los Angeles’ Laemmle Glendale from May 9. See a complete list of screenings here.

The Log Lady is one of the most enigmatic elements of Lynch’s headspinning, surrealist show, which ran from 1990-91 and made a return in 2017. The character’s real name was Margaret Lanterman but she was always referred to as the Log Lady as she is seen constantly cradling a log as if it were her child.
She lives in a cabin in the woods and claims she is able to channel cryptic messages through her log. Most characters dismiss her offhand, but Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) takes her more seriously, believing she may hold clues to the mystery of Laura Palmer’s death.
By the time of the 2017 return, Coulson had been diagnosed with terminal cancer but she decided with Lynch that she would resolve to play the part one more time. She passed away shortly after completing her scenes.
Director Green has said: “When Donna DuBain told me what lengths David Lynch and Catherine’s closest friends went through to get her final performance as the Log Lady on screen, days before she died, I knew there was a great story there. In their own words, Catherine’s friends weave a riveting tale of who Catherine was and and how and why the show must go on.”
Lynch himself died in January at the age of 78 after having been evacuated from his home during the city’s devastating wildfires.
Twin Peaks celebrated the 35th anniversary of its debut on ABC this week (April 8), with fans taking to social media to hail the show as “changing television forever”.
In February, meanwhile, the complete Twin Peaks box set, Z To A, was re-released. Originally released on Blu-ray in 2019, it was limited to just 25,000 copies worldwide, and contained all three seasons of the show, including the 2017 reboot Twin Peaks: The Return, as well as the 1992 film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
