Drake Shows Love to Lil Wayne After Kendrick Lamar Lands Super Bowl Halftime Show
It’s still Young Angel and Young Lion. The Young Money ties are running deep, as Drake has shown support for Lil Wayne after some in the hip-hop community were outraged Weezy was overlooked for Kendrick Lamar to headline the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show next year.
The 6 God posted a series of photos of his mentor to his Instagram Story on Tuesday evening (Sept. 10), seemingly demonstrating solidarity with Wayne being snubbed for the big game, which returns to the “Uproar” rapper’s hometown of New Orleans on Feb. 9, 2025.
Drake didn’t offer up any context on the pics — one of which is from the set of Weezy’s “A Milli” video — but it’s not hard to read between the lines.
There has been plenty of conversation regarding Wayne not being selected to headline next year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show. Fellow Young Money/Cash Money family members such as Nicki Minaj and Birdman have spoken out against the decision.
“Denying a young black man what he rightfully put into this game for no other reason but your ego. Your hatred for BIRDMAN, Drake & Nicki got you punishing Lil Wayne?!?!!! LIL WAYNE!!!!!!!!!! THE GOAT?!!!!!!!!!!! Nola what’s good,” Minaj tweeted in part.
No Limit Records boss Master P, Cam’ron and Mase have also voiced their frustrations with the move to not give Wayne his flowers.
In an interview earlier this year, Weezy admitted he wanted to get the call to perform at the Super Bowl in his hometown.
“I will not lie to you, I have not got a call,” he said back in February on YG’s 4Hunnid podcast. “But we all praying, we keeping our fingers crossed. I’m working hard. I’m going to make sure this next album and everything I do is killer, so I’m going make it very hard for them to … I want to just make it hard for them not to highlight the boy.”
