English Teacher, HighSchool and more for new Speedy Wunderground compilation
Speedy Wunderground has announced details of its latest annual compilation series, featuring contributions from English Teacher, HighSchool and more.
Set to arrive on August 30, the new instalment marks the sixth edition of the series, and will spotlight single releases that best summarise the South London-based label’s output across 2022 and 2023.
It features eight songs, and all of which are described as a snapshot in time for each of these artists as they were each recorded in a single day – as per the label’s studio rules.
Dutch post-punks Lewsberg open the tracklist with their song ‘Six Hills’, and this is followed by a track called ‘Oblique Fantasy’ by Jane Weaver, ‘Your God Owes You Money’ by The Queen’s Head, and ‘Only A Dream’ by Australian goth-poppers HighSchool.
The second side of the compilation includes a song from experimental rock pair O. – who released acclaimed debut album ‘WeirdOs’ earlier this year – psych-punks Hot Face, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tummyache, and newly-anointed Mercury Music Prize nominees and NME Cover stars English Teacher.
“I’m excited to have this collection ready. There is something that sets this apart from the previous 5 volumes: I had never worked with, and in most cases never even met any of the people on this record until the sessions for these songs,” said label head and producer Dan Carey.
“There’s a variety in how these collaborations came about. Jane Weaver and Lewsberg are artists that I’d been wanting to work with for a long time, whereas I saw Hot Face at The Windmill one night and just said come over to mine! I have calculated that as a result of this compilation, Speedy Wunderground now has 24 new friends.”

The announcement comes a year after the label celebrated its 10th anniversary, and shared a box set of the original dub remixes produced by the label’s co-founder Dan Carey from their singles series.
They also held an intimate London gig last September to mark the milestone too, which saw appearances from its current acts and some alumni.
As for English Teacher, the band recently spoke to NME about being shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, as well as progress on their second album.
“There’s a lot of temptation to not continue making music because you physically can’t,” Fontaine admitted, looking back at the struggles emerging artists face in 2024. “We had to push through so much stuff to actually make the album. It’s paid off in this weird culturally-recognised way, so it’s worth pushing through the hard times.”
