Kai changes his identity in music video for ‘Rover’
EXO member Kai has released the music video for ‘Rover’, the title track of his new third mini-album of the same name.
The music video for ‘Rover’ seems to draw inspiration from two classic movies: 2002’s Catch Me If You Can and 2000’s Billy Elliot. The clip opens with Kai choosing his new identity from a list of different personas, including one called “Mr. Leo”.
Later, he settles on the moniker “Elliot Billy”, before heading over to a theatre to perform, where he’s surrounded by a troupe of ballerinas. “Flip the thinking that cages you / As you see who I am, watch me go / Baby, catch me if you can, let’s race,” he sings on the bridge.
‘Rover’ marks Kai’s first solo release since his sophomore mini-album ‘Peaches’, which dropped in November 2021. That six-track record, led by a single of the same name, had marked one year since the idol made his solo debut with mini-album ‘KAI (开)’ in 2020.
Plans for Kai’s upcoming solo release were first revealed in February, after SPOTV News reported that the idol would be releasing a new album next month. At the time, SM Entertainment confirmed that the idol was set to release his new record mid-March, but did not disclose details.
In a four-star review of ‘Peaches’, NME’s Tanu I. Raj wrote that the singer “expands the world he’s created and adds maturity, a streak of danger and just a hint of vulnerability” on the record.
Kai first debuted as a member of EXO in 2012. He later went on to join SM Entertainment’s supergroup SuperM in 2019 alongside bandmate Baekhyun.
