‘Fable’ reboot no longer coming out this year
Xbox has confirmed the long-awaited Fable reboot is no longer coming out this year, but developers have reassured fans it will be “definitely worth the wait”.
A rebooted Fable game was first confirmed back in 2020, ten years after the last entry in the beloved action role-playing series. Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty compared the project to making a new Star Wars film. “There’s stuff that everyone wants you to bring along, but then you’ve got a responsibility to take that to new places.”
Last year, Xbox announced Fable would be released in 2025. The news came alongside a new trailer that confirmed Peep Show star Matt King would be playing retired hero Humphrey.
“What does it mean to be a Hero,” read the trailer’s description. “Humphry, once one of the greatest, will be forced out of retirement when a mysterious figure from his past threatens Albion’s very existence.“
However during an appearance on the official Xbox podcast, studio head Craig Duncan confirmed Fable has been delayed to give developers more time. It is now due for release at some point in 2026.
“While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is it’s definitely worth the wait,” he said (via Eurogamer). “I want the community to understand that we do these things for the best of the game and the teams. Ultimately that results in the best game for the community.”
We know how excited you are for Fable, and in order to make the best game possible for our players, we’re going to take a little more time and launch in 2026. “I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team and just what they’re bringing to Fable as a franchise. Amazing gameplay, British humour, Playground’s version of Albion is inspired by what has gone before with the franchise, but their take is quite frankly the most beautifully realised version of Albion you’ve ever seen,” Duncan added.
The video podcast also featured some more footage of the new Fable.
In other news Balatro, one of 2024’s biggest hits, is now available to play on Xbox Game Pass.
