Fans are remembering David Lynch through his favourite bands and songs

David Lynch

Following David Lynch‘s death, fans have been remembering the legendary director through his favourite bands and songs.

His death was announced by his family yesterday (January 16) and came after the Twin Peaks creator was reportedly “forced to relocate from his house” due to the Los Angeles wildfires. He was aged 78.

Lynch’s favourite artists included Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Duran Duran, Lissie, Pixies and David Bowie.

Taking to social media many fans shared his favourite songs including Redding’s ‘I’ve Been Loving You Too Long’ which became an integral part of Twin Peaks and Julee Cruise‘s ‘Falling’ which served as the show’s theme song. Others shared Peter Ivers’ ‘In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song’) which featured in his 1977 film Eraserhead and Rammstein‘s self-titled song in his 1997 movie Lost Highway.

Other songs Lynch was a big fan of was Buddy Holly‘s ‘Peggy Sue’, Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Wild Thing’ and Lissie’s ‘Wild West’. You can view a full playlist of his favourite songs and artists by Far Out below.

Lynch’s musical interest stretched to on-record work with his film music collaborators such as Angelo Badalamenti and Cruise and three solo albums of electro-blues and rock between 2001 and 2013, featuring the likes of Karen O and Lykke Li. Characteristically, he played guitar on his 2001 debut BlueBob upside down and backwards, lap guitar style. His most recent musical release was with long-time collaborator Chrystabell on last year’s ‘Cellophane Memories’.

Elsewhere, in film and TV, Lynch was best known for titles such as Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Elephant Man and the less-than-favourable Dune. His longtime collaborator and friend Kyle MacLachlan has since paid tribute to the late filmmaker, saying he “owes” his life and career to Lynch. The pair have worked on numerous titles together including Dune, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks.

Lynch revealed his emphysema diagnosis last year, which was caused by smoking for most of his life. In November, he revealed he required supplemental oxygen to walk.

Despite this, he said he would “never retire”, and would direct remotely and work on other projects if it was necessary.

He also directed several music videos, notably Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ which featured in his 1990 movie Wild At Heart. His other music video credits include Moby‘s ‘Shot In The Back Of The Head’, Nine Inch Nails‘ ‘Came Back Haunted’ and Donovan’s ‘I Am The Shaman’.
