Father John Misty shares sprawling new single ‘Screamland’ from sixth album ‘Mahashmashana’
Father John Misty has shared a new single called ‘Screamland’ from his forthcoming sixth album, ‘Mahashmashana’. Listen below.
The sprawling and expansive track – which clocks in at just shy of seven minutes – arrived on digital streaming platforms today (September 17), after being teased online recently.
It was previously released in full on the singer-songwriter’s official Soundcloud account, along with the studio version of ‘She Cleans Up’ – a song that FJM debuted live earlier this month.
“Stabbing at the ashtray like it might give up the truth,” he sings in ‘Screamland’. “Like it might finally confess who else you’re nearly faithful to.” The artist – real name Joshua Tillman – then delivers a powerful refrain over a grand instrumental: “Stay young/ Get numb/ Keep dreaming/ Screamland.”
The single is accompanied by a vertically-shot music video, directed and edited by Estefania Kröl. Tune in here:
Both ‘Screamland’ and ‘She Cleans Up’ will appear on Tillman’s new album ‘Mahashmashana’, which is due for release on November 22 via Sub Pop/Bella Union (pre-order/pre-save here).
The follow-up to 2022’s ‘Chloë And The Next 20th Century’ was co-produced by Tillman and Drew Erickson. A brief description of the project reads: “After a decade being born, Josh Tillman is finally busy dying. ‘Mahashmashana’ is the sixth album by Father John Misty.”
‘Mahashmashana’ will also feature the previously teased song ‘Josh Tillman And The Accidental Dose’ and July’s ‘I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All’. Check out the full tracklist below:
Father John Misty’s ‘Mahashmashana’ tracklisting is:
‘Mahashmashana’
‘She Cleans Up’
‘Josh Tillman And The Accidental Dose’
‘Mental Health’
‘Screamland’
‘Being You’
‘I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All’
‘Summer’s Gone’
Additionally, FJM’s official store states that fans who pre-order the album before 3pm BST on September 23 will receive early access to his yet-to-be-announced 2025 UK and European tour.
Tillman is currently out on the road in North America. He is hosting a series of “listening events” in the US this month and next too – find all the details here.
In a glowing five-star review of ‘Chloë And The Next 20th Century’, NME said that the album “showcases what Tillman’s imagination can do when it is set free to explore new and unpredictable sonic paths”.
It continued: “‘Olvidado (Otro Momento)’, a shimmying bossa nova track that sees him sing in Spanish, never settles entirely, expanding its woozy ambience into a thick beat made up of quietly vast percussive flourishes. It’s a perfect example of how nothing on this album ends up quite where you’d expect it – including the ever-evolving artist who made it.”
