Set for release on October 4 via Polydor/Interscope Records, the new album marks the first from the Grammy and Academy Award-winning artist, songwriter, and producer since his breakthrough LP ‘Optimist’, which arrived in 2021.
Coming in at 10 songs long, the project sees Finneas himself taking on the production of the project, and was born out of a series of live studio sessions in Los Angeles, where he brought together some of his closest friends and peers.
Today (August 8) to celebrate the release, the musician has dropped the title track as the lead single from the album.
In the song, Finneas finds himself trapped in an endless loop between love and hurt, singing about a relationship coming to an end but still possessing a determination to hold on. “Maybe it’s me, or maybe it’s you/ maybe I never learned my lesson/someone to seek, someone to soothe/ someone to answer all your questions,” he sings in the reflective opening lines.
“I don’t know what to tell you/ maybe I Never knew/ not tryna make you jealous, but it looks so good on you.”
The song also comes with an Isaac Ravishankara-directed music video, which sees him battle with falling down an elevator shaft, getting stuck with a knife and being hit by a car, all while trying to chase after a failing relationship. Check it out above.
As for the album as a whole, a press release states that the project sees Finneas move beyond the sound he laid out in his 2021 debut, and push the boundaries when it comes to taking a more epic approach to songwriting.
“This time, For Cryin’ Out Loud! sees Finneas expand his creative horizons, steering things away from the bedroom producer mentality and to a classic studio/band environment, freeing [him] and ultimately resulting in his most uplifting and raw body of work to date,” it read.

News of Finneas’ new album comes shortly after he contributed to sister Billie Eilish’s third studio album ‘Hit Me Hard And Soft’, and after he took home his second Academy Award for ‘What Was I Made For’ which he co-wrote and produced for the Barbie soundtrack.
At time of writing, he is also making his television scoring debut, working on the upcoming Apple TV+ limited series Disclaimer.
In a four-star review of the Billie Eilish LP for NME, Thomas Smith wrote: “‘Hit Me Hard And Soft’ remains distinctly unique, a portrait of a singular talent entering young adulthood, exploring her queerness and experiencing the emotional thrill and (sometimes) catastrophe of chasing passion or falling in love. In trying to write an album for herself, she’s made one that will resonate harder than anything she’s done before.”
