‘Fortnite’ movie not on the cards despite rumours

Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney has shut down rumours of a Fortnite movie.

Over the weekend, movie industry insider Daniel “DanielRPK” Richtman took to X to claim that Fortnite would be the “next” game to get a Hollywood adaptation following the success of A Minecraft Movie.

“You just know Fortnite is next,” he wrote in a now-deleted tweet (via Eurogamer). “There was already talk of a Fortnite movie, but some studios passed on it. That’s obviously gonna change now.” Replying to the Tweet, Sweeney simply wrote “false”.

However it’s not known if Sweeney was denying that a Fortnite movie was in the works, or if studios had already passed on the project.

Back in 2023, Fortnite fan Zack Snyder was asked if he’d ever want to direct a big screen adaptation of the hit battle royale game. “Of course,” he replied. “Fortnite is an amazing world and it’s an amazing distraction for me. It’s really cool, the alchemy they’ve created there is really unique. When I started playing it, I thought I knew what it was and then it was something entirely different. You can definitely never say never, that’s my mantra in this business. “

Fast X director Louis Leterrier has also expressed interest in a Fortnite movie. “The game is incredible,” he said during a Comic-Con panel (via ScreenRant). “There’s so much more to be told. It’d be funny. It would be full of action and everything.”

The rumours of a Fortnite movie come after A Minecraft Movie’s huge opening weekend. Starring Jack Black, Emma Meyers, Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Collidge, the big screen adaptation of Minecraft has already taken $301million at the box office despite negative reviews.

In a two-star review, NME wrote: “A Minecraft Movie feels more like an advert for the game rather than a celebration of what makes it great. There is just enough in the brisk 101-minute runtime to inspire newcomers to check out The Overworld for themselves but you’d think a film about the awesome power of creativity would be a bit more innovative.”

In other news, Nintendo has announced it will be delaying pre-orders of the Switch 2 in the US due to “evolving market conditions” following new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump earlier this week.
