Gearbox boss gives update on next ‘Borderlands’ game

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has given fans an update about the next Borderlands game.

Borderlands 3 was released back in 2019 but the studio has released two spin-offs since, with New Tales From The Borderlands coming in 2022 alongside Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.

However, with a big screen adaptation hitting cinemas next month, the studio has given fans an update on the next instalment in the franchise.

“I haven’t been perfect at hiding the fact that we’re working on many things, and that we’re working on big things,” Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford told Gamesradar+.  “I’m confident that our fans are going to be very, very happy with the next video game project when we are ready to announce it. And I will tell you that we’re not going to be making people wait for a long time before we announce it.”

An announcement about the next game could happen before the end of the year, he continued. “I have the biggest and best team that I’ve ever had working on what we know is exactly what our fans want from us – so I’m very, very thrilled. I can’t wait to talk about it! I wish I could just gush right now because we’ve got so much to say!”

Pitchford also teased that the success of RPG-inspired Tiny Tina’s Wonderland could lead to more fantasy games. “So many of us at Gearbox love fantasy, and it gives us that kind of place to to mess around with that in the context of the Borderlands themes and universe. I think it’s reasonable for our fans to expect more there,” he explained.

Earlier this year, Embracer sold Gearbox to Take-Two Interactive for £365million as part of a cost-cutting restructuring. At the time, Take-Two confirmed a new Borderlands title was in “active development”.

The press release also confirmed Gearbox were working on an additional four titles, including another instalment in the Homeworld franchise, and “at least one exciting new intellectual property.”

Eli Roth’s adaptation of Borderlands is due to hit cinemas August 6, and will see Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis star in the sci-fi action comedy.

In other news, Kit Harington has made his return to the world of Game Of Thrones, by way of an ad for new mobile game Legends.
