Glastonbury 2024: Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker announces surprise DJ set at Glastonbury tonight
Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker has announced a surprise Glastonbury DJ set tonight (June 28) at 1am.
On the official Glastonbury website, the slot between 1am and 2am on the Firmly Rooted Soundsystem stage reads “TBA”, but Parker’s name is listed in the programme.
The blurb under it reads, “The Antipodean psychedelic rock icon takes to the decks.” Meanwhile, Parker has confirmed the news on the official Tame Impala Instagram account, too. “GLASTONBURY come see me tonight at the Firmly Rooted sound system in Silver Hayes at 1am,” he wrote. “DJ set. Should be pretty funnnnn.”
The Australian musician and producer has appeared at Glastonbury with Tame Impala a number of times before, headlining The Other Stage in 2019. The psychedelic project won’t be there this year, but a Parker DJ set is sure to be a pleasant surprise for fans.
With Parker’s set coming just hours after Dua Lipa headlines the Pyramid Stage, some festivalgoers have speculated that he could appear during Lipa’s set, too. He co-wrote and co-produced Lipa’s latest album, ‘Radical Optimism’, which was released in May.
Upon the album’s release, Parker paid tribute to Lipa on Instagram, calling her an “absolute weapon” and saying, “Don’t think I’ve ever been so proud of something I’ve worked on on release day.”
Meanwhile, Parker last month sold his entire music catalogue to Sony Music Publishing. He signed a global deal with Sony in 2020, giving them control of future releases from both Parker himself and Tame Impala. However, it’s thought that the new deal encompasses past releases too.
Tame Impala aren’t touring at the moment, and haven’t played live since a set at Lollapalooza in Brazil in 2023. Their most recent album, ‘The Slow Rush’, came out in February 2020. In a four-star review, NME wrote, “Tame Impala are unlikely to lose any fans by embracing Parker’s pop sensibilities – genres are history, man – but you have to admire their wilful desire to push into new directions. This band aren’t rock music’s saviours; they’re so much more than that.”
Tame Impala might not be at Glastonbury this year, but you can see who else is appearing, like Parker, at the festival with our stage times and full line-up. Visit here for all the latest news, reviews, photos, interviews and more from Glastonbury 2024.
