‘Grand Theft Auto Online’ will continue after ‘GTA 6’ is released
Grand Theft Auto 6 publisher Take-Two has said it’s likely it will continue to support Grand Theft Auto Online after the sequel is released.
Grand Theft Auto Online is a spin-off from 2013’s Grand Theft Auto 5 and has generated billions of dollars for Take-Two. However, fans have been worried the imminent launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 means GTA Online will be shut down.
In a new interview with IGN, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has addressed those concerns. “I’m going to speak theoretically only because I’m not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn’t been made,” he said. “But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles.”
“As an example, we launched NBA 2K Online in China, I think originally in 2012 if I’m not mistaken,” Zelnick continued. “And then we launched NBA 2K Online 2 in China in 2017. If I’m not mistaken. We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they’re alive and we have this massive audience. So we’ve shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them.”
Rockstar hasn’t confirmed how many players are still active on Grand Theft Auto Online but it’s been reported that hundreds of thousands of people regularly use the service. As of last April, Grand Theft Auto 5 has generated $8billion in revenue, with a bulk of that coming from Online.
Grand Theft Auto 6 doesn’t currently have a release date but Zelnick is “feeling good” about the gaming coming this year. Meanwhile, one PC accessory company has reported that the PC version of the game will be released in early 2026.
As well as coming to PlayStation and Xbox, Grand Theft Auto 6 could also see a Nintendo Switch 2 launch. ““There was a time when Nintendo platforms were geared at younger audiences, that was reflected in our release schedule. Today, with Switch and potentially with Switch 2, the Switch device can support any audience,” explained Zelnick.
In other news, it’s been reported that Grand Theft Auto 6 could take influence from games such as Roblox and Fortnite,
