Green Day announce ‘American Idiot’ 20th anniversary reissue – including new documentary and unreleased songs
Green Day have announced an expanded 20th anniversary reissue of their hit album ‘American Idiot’, featuring a new documentary and various unreleased tracks. Find all the details below.
The pop-punk trio are set to release “limited edition super deluxe box sets” of their Grammy Award-winning 2004 record on October 25. Fans will be able to buy the collection on 8LP vinyl and 4CD, with each package also containing two Blu-ray discs.
Additionally, Green Day will drop a limited edition colour vinyl of the original 2LP version of ‘American Idiot’.
To mark the announcement today (August 9), the band have shared three cuts on streaming platforms: the previously unreleased ‘Holiday/Boulevard Of Broken Dreams (Demo)’, the fan favourite B-side ‘Favorite Son’ and ‘Minority (Live From Irving Plaza)’.
Tune in here:
The upcoming box sets boast 15 unreleased ‘American Idiot’ demos, a 15-track 2004 live show recorded at Irving Plaza in New York City, nine previously unreleased live recordings (including a cover of Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’) and 14 songs previously available only as B-Sides and bonus tracks.
What’s more, one of the Blu-rays will house a brand-new, 110-minute documentary film titled 20 Years Of American Idiot. The other disc features the Heart Like A Hand Grenade movie, which documents “nine months with Green Day” as they record ‘American Idiot’.
There’s also a selection of ‘BBC Live’ performances such as tracks from Top Of The Pops and Later… With Jools Holland.
Each LP in the vinyl box set has been pressed on a unique colour. This edition comes with a 36-page book, a large Green Day flag and the iconic ‘American Idiot’ red tie. Meanwhile, the CD version contains a 48-page book, enamel pin set, sticker sheet and cloth patch.
Completing the anniversary package are new liner notes written by Rob Cavallo and Rolling Stone’s David Fricke. You can see the official artwork and full tracklists below, and pre-order/pre-save here.

‘American Idiot’ was produced by Rob Cavallo and Green Day, and hit Number One on the US’ Billboard 200 and the UK albums chart. The record has since sold over 23million copies worldwide, with nine million in the US alone. In 2005, it won the Best Rock Album award at the Grammys.
The project went on to inspire a Broadway musical of the same name, which won two Tony Awards and a Grammy.
Green Day have been performing ‘American Idiot’ in its entirety on their 2024 ‘Saviors’ world tour to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary.
In a five-star review of the band’s show in Manchester this summer, NME wrote: “By the time we reach ‘American Idiot’, Armstrong has hit red-hot form, and the volume seems to have been cranked up a notch. There’s no room for ‘21 Guns’ on this setlist, but the emotional potency of ‘Boulevard Of Broken Dreams’ feels magnified.”
It went on to praise Green Day for “combining class, youthfulness and scruffy punk anthems into a trademark stadium-rock event”.
Meanwhile, frontman Armstrong recently held up a Donald Trump mask – with the word “idiot” written across its forehead – at a gig in Washington, DC. He once again changed the ‘American Idiot’ lyrics too, singing: “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”
