‘GTA 6’ unlikely to launch on Xbox Game Pass after developer’s comments
Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming out next year, but don’t expect to see it on Game Pass after Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick’s comments about the service.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Zelnick said putting triple-A games on Game Pass on the day they come out “doesn’t make any sense to us, because economically speaking, we don’t think consumers are prepared to pay for that. And we can’t afford to turn our business upside down in a way that doesn’t make sense economically.”
That was back in 2022, but his position appears to be unchanged. While he thinks “that offering a frontline title with a premium price in a subscription service, day and date,” like Call of Duty Black Ops 6, “will push consumers to that subscription service for at least a period of time”, it hasn’t changed the way Take-Two plans to sell the games it publishes.
“No, it won’t affect our decisions,” Zelnick says. “Because our decisions are rational.”
Grand Theft Auto 6 is the upcoming entry in Rockstar’s open-world series of shooters and should hit shelves sometime in autumn 2025. Despite layoffs at studios under Take-Two, it has reiterated GTA 6 is still on track for that release window. It’s set in Vice City, inspired by Miami and the surrounding Florida landscape.
The official first trailer shows off plenty of references to real-world locations and news stories out of the Sunshine State, showing the game is going to continue to satirise the U.S. as it always has.
One former Rockstar developer believes fans might be disappointed by the upcoming game, however, as it’s unlikely to have as much of a technical leap that we saw between the older games.
In other news, the new Monster Hunter game is getting fans incredibly excited thanks to a video showing off one of the weapons.
