Harvey Weinstein in intensive care in hospital after emergency heart surgery
Disgraced director Harvey Weinstein is in intensive care recovering from emergency heart surgery, his lawyer has confirmed.
Weinstein was taken from Rikers Island prison, where he is serving a sentence for rape, to Bellevue Hospital in New York earlier today after experiencing chest pains.
“Mr Weinstein was rushed to Bellevue Hospital last night due to several medical conditions.
“We can confirm that Mr Weinstein had a procedure and surgery on his heart today however cannot comment any further than that.
“As we have extensively stated before, Mr. Weinstein suffers a plethora of significant health issues that need ongoing treatment.”
Weinstein was recently said to be a “train-wreck health-wise” and had been in the same hospital for 10 days earlier this year. He was admitted again in July after testing positive for COVID-19 and contracting pneumonia in both of his lungs.
He was found guilty on February 24, 2020 of first-degree and third-degree rape and sentenced to 23 years in prison. In April, the New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s 2020 conviction for rape, deeming that the judge at the trial gave improper rulings. This included the decision to let women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case
However, Weinstein remains imprisoned, serving a 16 year sentence following a 2022 California rape conviction.
He is currently awaiting a retrial in New York in relation to the conviction that was thrown out.
