‘Heartstoppers’ to conclude with feature-length film
Netflix has announced that Heartstopper will end with one final feature-length finale, based on the sixth and final Alice Oseman graphic novel.
The LGBTQ+ themed show debuted in 2022, telling the story of Nick and Charlie (Kit Connor and Joe Locke), two school friends who fall in love and navigate the obstacles of teenage romance. The show has been praised for its portrayal of Queer identity, and has won five Emmys in total.
The third and most recent season was released in 2024, and now appears to be wrapping up with a movie.
In a press release, the streamer said: “Netflix has today (on the third anniversary of the launch of season one) announced that Heartstopper will return for one final feature film. After three seasons of the fan-favourite series, the much-anticipated final instalment will conclude the story of Nick, Charlie and their friends, with the narrative based around the yet unreleased volume six of Alice Oseman’s graphic novels”.
Connor and Locke will serve as executive producers, with production set to commence this summer. A release date has yet to be revealed.
The official synopsis reads: “Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”
Elsewhere in the press release, author and series creator Oseman said: “I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story. I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion”.
As recently as February, Oseman said she didn’t have “a final answer” on the show’s continuation, which was in doubt briefly. However, it appears that the show described as “vital” in NME’s season three review will now be able to finish its story.
