Here Are Our Favorite Met Gala Looks

The first Monday in May is almost upon us, which can only mean one thing: The Met Gala has arrived. This year, the theme for the most exclusive event in fashion and culture is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” a love letter to the late, great fashion icon behind Chanel, Fendi and his own eponymous fashion house.

It’s the first time the Met Gala theme has centered around a singular designer since back in 2017, when the event’s dress code honored Comme des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo for the exhibit “Art of the In-Between.”

Somewhat unconventionally, the past two years of exhibitions at the Anna Wintour Costume Center have been a multi-chapter examination of the development and history of U.S. fashion with 2021’s “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and 2022’s “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.”

Each year, the Met Gala gives the brightest stars a chance to shine on the museum’s red carpet in looks that have ranged from iconically campy (see Lady Gaga’s grand entrance in four separate looks for 2019’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion”) and positively reverential (2018’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”) to all things avant garde and haute couture (basically every time Rihanna shuts down the carpet — most memorably in the hand-constructed yellow gown she wore for 2015’s “China: Through the Looking Glass”).

Dua Lipa, Roger Federer, Michaela Coel and Penelope Cruz will serve as this year’s co-hosts, while other reliable mainstays on the Met Gala carpet in recent years include Blake Lively, Jared Leto, Cardi B, Harry Styles and Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra.
