Here’s how ‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ will take influence from ‘Roblox’ and ‘Fortnite’
Grand Theft Auto 6 will take influence from games such as Roblox and Fortnite, claims a new report.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is due out later this year and will return players to Vice City for a Bonnie & Clyde-inspired story that will make use of dual protagonists Lucia and Jason. Not much else is known about the highly-anticipated sequel but according to Digiday, the game may include user-generated content.
Online platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite currently allow players to modify their environments and bring their own creations into the games. These content creators can also monetise their designs.
Digiday reports that Grand Theft Auto 6 developers Rockstar have had “open-ended” conversations with a number of popular content creators. “These experiences would allow creators to modify the game’s environment and assets to bring their own intellectual property — and potentially their brand sponsors — into ‘GTA’s virtual sandbox,” Digiday said.
2013’s Grand Theft Auto 5 has remained hugely popular thanks to its dedicated online and modding communities. In 2023, Rockstar acquired CFX.RE who were behind some of the most successful mods for GTA and Red Dead Redemption 2.
“It is my firm belief that is the reason that they purchased [CFX.RE] is to spin up a metaversal universe of custom-built experiences, and potentially user-generated content items with an attached creator economy,” Pete Basgen, global gaming and esports lead for WPP agency Wavemaker, told Digiday. “It will essentially occupy that adult-enumerated space at the top of the ecosystem; there’s a very natural place there for people that graduate from Roblox and Minecraft.”
Last year, T-Pain confirmed he was working on Grand Theft Auto 6 but claimed he had to quit a GTA role-playing community to take the job.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is due for release later this year and according to PC accessories company Corsair Gaming, the PC edition will launch next year. “My understanding now is that it’s going to come out in the fall for console and then early 2026 for PC,” said their chief financial officer.
In other news, the long-awaited Final Fantasy 9 remake could be released next year, according to industry insiders.
