The star has won praise and an Oscar nomination for playing Dylan in A Complete Unknown, which looks at the early days of the folk legend’s career. Speaking to Anderson Cooper in an interview for 60 Minutes, the host asked Chalamet if he thought it was strange they had never met.
“It’s not” the actor replied. “He doesn’t seem like he wants to be bothered by, not me, but by everyone in the last 60, 70 years”. Asked what he might say if they crossed paths, he said: “I would just say ‘thank you’” before retracting that statement.
“You know what? That’s bullshit, I’m gonna take that back” he said with a chuckle. “I would honestly just be like, I would play it super cool, you know? Because I feel like he’s probably used to so much hyperbole and praise. Maybe I would try to out-Bob him, just strangely not bring anything up. Maybe just talk about the weather or what his favourite sandwich is. Something like that”.
Earlier in the interview, he discussed his approach to acting. “I give 170% in everything I’m doing, no, ‘But,’ there” he explains. “I’m giving it my all. Something like the Dylan project, these aren’t watered-down experiences. I’m going Daniel Day-Lewis on all of them. I’m not saying in process, but I’m saying a level of commitment”.
This counted doubly for A Complete Unknown, as he reportedly wouldn’t use his mobile phone during filming, or allow visitors on set. “I’ve never approached a character so intensely as Bob, because I have such respect for the material” he said. “And I knew I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I remembered that I was lazy on a day when something went wrong”.
As well as being a hit with critics and audiences, A Complete Unknown recently passed a box office milestone, earning over $100million worldwide. Meanwhile, Timothée Chalamet’s guitar teacher opened up about the actor’s commitment to playing like Dylan.
