Hi-Fi Rush shares “positive” update on potential sequel
The creators of Hi-Fi Rush have shared a “positive” update around a potential sequel.
Hit music game Hi-Fi Rush was released at the start of 2023 and went on to win a number of awards. One Xbox marketing executive described it as “a breakout hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations,” but earlier this year, Microsoft closed down developers Tango Gameworks alongside a few other studios.
The studio was then purchased by Krafton alongside the Hi-Fi Rush IP. Boss Krafton boss Changhan ‘CH’ Kim said the “last minute” deal was about “legacy” rather than profit but fans were still hopeful about a sequel.
In a new interview with IGN, studio head Colin Mack confirmed the team were working on a sequel when Tango Gameworks was shut down but development hasn’t restarted just yet. “We are considering a sequel positively. We are not yet at the stage where we can say specifically, ‘This is what we’re going to do.’ ”
“I think Tango Gameworks is about taking on new challenges,” explained project manager Kazuaki Egashira.
“Many of our staff have a lot of love for [Hi-Fi Rush], so we feel like we have options. We’re currently at the stage of considering various opportunities,” added director John Johanas.
“It’s important to try new things. I worked on The Evil Within, directed its DLC, and then directed the sequel The Evil Within 2. I don’t think I could have made yet another horror game at that point, because there’s only so much you can do with the same material. It’s risky to try something completely different, sure — but I think a sequel to a series is also a risk in itself.”
The article also confirms the relaunched Tango Gameworks will start hiring new staff in the next few weeks after half of its workforce was lost during the shutdown.
In other news, the writer of iconic Sonic The Hedgehog track ‘Live And Learn’ is suing Sega for $1million over ownership of the song after it was used in over 25 different games.
