‘Hogwarts Legacy’ expansion has been cancelled, claims new report
A number of planned expansions for Hogwarts Legacy have been scrapped, according to a new report.
Hogwarts Legacy was first released in 2023 and went on to become one of the biggest selling games of the year, despite middling reviews and backlash towards Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling over her “anti-trans” comments on social media.
The original release of Hogwarts Legacy was followed by a PlayStation 5 Pro update and official mod support. To start with, developers said they had “no plans” to work on a DLC for the game but earlier this year, Bloomberg claimed an expansion and a “definitive edition” of Hogwarts Legacy were in the works ahead of the planned sequel.
However yesterday (March 27), Bloomberg reported that the planned DLC for Hogwarts Legacy and the refreshed version of the original game have now been scrapped as part of the “ongoing restructuring” at Warner Bros. Insider Gaming claimed the DLC was set to feature between 10 and 15 hours of new quests but was scrapped because the content was “not substantial enough to justify the price being considered.”
The planned Hogwarts Legacy sequel is still in development though. Last year, Warner Bros. announced that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is the studio’s highest priority and will tie into HBO’s Harry Potter remake. It was thought the planned expansion would bridge the events of Hogwarts Legacy, which is set in the 1800s, with the more modern world of the Harry Potter books.
“We have known for some time that fans are looking for more things in this world, and so we’re spending a lot of time thinking about that,” president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s David Haddad explained last year. “Our insights tell us that there are not huge distinctions between a younger version of a fan and an older version of a fan. They’re just deep Harry Potter fans, and we try to build authentic experiences to delight them.”
No release date for Hogwarts Legacy 2 has been announced, but the HBO adaptation has been pushed back to 2027.
Earlier this week, it was claimed Nick Frost is in talks to play Hagrid in the series, while Janet McTeer and Paapa Essiedu have also reportedly had meetings about playing Professor Minerva McGonagall and Professor Severus Snape, respectively.
John Lithgow has confirmed he is playing Professor Dumbledore in the show, and while the actors for Harry, Ron and Hermione have yet to be announced, more than 32,000 kids auditioned for the roles.
In other news, Tony Hawk has defended the new soundtrack for Pro Skater 3+4, which features a mix of OG anthems and music from newer artists.
