‘House Of The Dragon’ star says season 2 will “lean into the formula of ‘Game of Thrones’ of old”

Matt Smith attends the 'House Of The Dragon' premiere.

House Of The Dragon star Matt Smith has shared an update on the upcoming season of HBO‘s hit fantasy show – see what he had to say below.

Speaking to Deadline Hollywood at the premiere of House Of The Dragon season two, Smith and other cast mates from the show revealed key aspects of the upcoming series. When asked by Deadline about the tonal shift between seasons 1 and 2, Smith suggested that it will feel more familiar.

“First and foremost, last season, obviously there were the time jumps. And we were all together a lot of the time. This time, I suppose it leans into the formula of Game of Thrones of old, where you’re out exploring different worlds and pockets of the world of Thrones, or the world of King’s Landing or whatever, Westeros as a whole. And getting into different areas and zones with different families, really.”

His cast mate Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower, teased that she “leaves the castle” this season: “I left the castle. That was huge for me. I went to Spain. I went to Wales and I went to Surrey. I’m excited for people to see me out of the castle.”

The second season was renewed five days after the premiere of season one, in August 2022, and is set to air on June 16 2024.

Starring Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans among others, the first season of House Of The Dragon received high acclaim, and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama.

In a four-star review of the first season, NME wrote: “What is reassuring is that House Of The Dragon feels as though it is walking on solid ground: the bubbling rivalries, the jostling for power, the eruptions of violence; six episodes in, it is all coming together to create a rich stew … it is a relief to see a prequel that seems to know what it’s doing. A decent watch for fans and neutrals alike.”
