Hozier left confused as fans get engaged during ‘Cherry Wine’: “This of all songs?”
A couple got engaged at a Hozier show as he played ‘Cherry Wine’, which confused him given the song’s dark subject matter.
Despite sometimes being misinterpreted as a love song, ‘Cherry Wine’ is actually about domestic abuse – “The way she tells me I’m hers and she’s mine/Open hand or closed fist would be fine/The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine,” Hozier sings in the chorus.
A proposal took place as Hozier was playing the song during a show in Madison, Wisconsin, so he stopped to acknowledge it when he heard people screaming in excitement before restarting the song.
“Congratulations,” he told the couple. “Congratulations on putting the fear of God into me, well done. I’m so delighted for you. Is that the hand, newly ringed?” he said as the bride-to-be showed her new ring off. “Alright… this of all the songs too?”

Some of his fans weren’t especially amused either. “cherry wine being one of the view songs hozier actually enunciates in and you can VERY clearly hear the lyrics and the explicit mentions of domestic abuse and yall STILL misinterpret it. i’m convinced some of you listen to music with your ears plugged,” one fan wrote on X/Twitter.

In other news, Hozier released a powerful new political single ‘Nobody’s Soldier’ this week.
The song is taken from his new EP, ‘Unaired’, which has also been released today. ‘Nobody’s Soldier’ was initially debuted by Hozier recently during his headline set at Lollapalooza 2024 and followed on from another new song, ‘July’, which he shared on social media last month.
A statement about ‘Nobody’s Soldier’ says it “highlights the hugely problematic issues of global arms dealing.”
The powerful new song hear’s Hozier sing: “I don’t wanna choose between being a salesman or a soldier / Just let me look a little older / Let me step a little bolder / Choose between being a butcher or a pauper / Honey, I’m taking no orders / Gonna be Nobody’s Soldier.”
His Lollapalooza 2024 show also saw him call for a ceasefire in Gaza ahead of playing ‘Nobody’s Soldier’.
