Hugh Grant upset by “creepy” customs experience at Heathrow airport

Hollywood star Hugh Grant has hit out at Heathrow airport security after an exchange between an immigration officer and his children.

Grant is married to Anna Elisabet Eberstein, and the couple share three children. The actor has a son and daughter from previous relationships.

On X (formerly Twitter), the Love Actually star recalled the incident, saying: “Just came through Heathrow with wife and children. We all have the same last name (Grant) on our passports. Immigration officer engages my children in chit chat then whispers to them ‘Are these your Mum and Dad?’”. He described the exchange as: “Intrusive, insulting and creepy”.

NME has reached out to Heathrow Airport for comment.

Grant has been a vocal about intrusions into his private life in the past. A high-profile opponent of tabloid misconduct, particularly cases of phone hacking. He recently settled a case with News Group Newspapers (NGN), publishers of The Sun, over alleged phone hacking and burglary by journalists. NGN have denied the claims.

TV presenter Piers Morgan recently called him a “hypocrite” for making films for companies owned by The Murdoch Family, whose newspapers he took to court. Grant called the accusations “bullshit”, and clarified that he worked for a Murdoch-owned studio once, long before he was aware of their papers’ alleged practices.

Hugh Grant has moved out of his expected genre of romantic comedies in recent years, playing a horror villain in 2024 hit Heretic. He did, however, return to one of his most familiar roles in February, reprising the part of Daniel Cleaver for Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy.

While the film debuted on streaming service Peacock in the US, in the film’s home country of the UK it was a smash hit at the box office, with sales for the fourth instalment of the series outpacing Barbie at one point.
