INXS unearth unreleased recordings, demos for ‘Listen Like Thieves’ 40th anniversary collection

INXS have announced a 40th anniversary deluxe for their classic 1985 album ‘Listen Like Thieves’ – find out more below.

Last night (February 12), the Sydney rock veterans took to social media to announce the new collection, which is due for release on May 9. The deluxe edition – meant to celebrate the album’s 40th anniversary – will be available in several variations, including a 1LP and 3CD set.

The ‘Listen Like Thieves’ anniversary deluxe features a new mix of the album by Giles Martin and Paul Hicks, and includes a number of unreleased outtakes, previously unheard songs and demos and an interview with the band by writer Paul Sexton.

It will also include a selection of B-sides, remixes and live recordings, as well as the rare BBC recording ‘Live From The Royal Albert Hall, London, 1986’.

The band’s 1985 record marked their international breakthrough, and in 1986, INXS played a career-defining show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, which was recorded by the BBC and only recently unearthed. The performance – though not their first in the UK – was a big deal, drawing in audience members like Mick Jagger, The Cult and the Psychedelic Furs.

Five years later, the band headlined Wembley Stadium, performing to a sold-out crowd of 72,000 fans.

The band’s 1987 album ‘Kick’ would be their best-performing album to date. In 1997, frontman Michael Hutchence died by suicide. After his death, it emerged that Hutchence had suffered brain damage after being assaulted by a taxi driver in Denmark in 1995.

Following Hutchence’s death, INXS briefly disbanded, before reuniting with a revolving door of replacement vocalists. They would permanently disband in 2012, but in October 2023 briefly reunited in Sydney for the launch of their book Calling All Nations, and to pay tribute to Hutchence.
