The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows, Black Adam) and stars Taron Egerton (Rocketman, Kingsman) as Ethan Kopek, a young airport security officer who is blackmailed into letting a nerve agent onboard a flight during Christmas Eve.
Jason Bateman, Danielle Deadwyler and Logan Marshall-Green co-star in the film, which was released onto Netflix on December 13.
The film was first announced in 2021 as part of a deal between Netflix and Amblin and has been written by T.J. Fixman, a former video game writer, with a budget of $47million (£37million).
The film currently sits on an impressive 84 per cent critics score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with a lower audience rating of 59 per cent.
Is Carry-On 2 going to be made?
While there has been no official word on whether there will be a second film in the Carry-On universe, many fans have speculated that it could be a real possibility given the nature of the premise.
Some have pointed to the success of the Die Hard sequels as a suggestion of how well further Carry-On films could work, and Egerton himself has said he thinks it has potential.
Speaking on the Today show in the US, the actor said: “It’s kind of like an extraordinary set of circumstances, so I think it would need a really innovative, creative idea to feel like a worthy idea for a sequel. But yeah, why not.”
“[Sequels] work for Die Hard, so who knows?” he added.
Netflix typically allows its titles six to eight weeks of streaming before deciding whether to commission further seasons or sequels, so fans of Carry-On are likely to find out early in 2025 if there is more to come from the franchise.
