Is ‘Heartstopper’ season four happening?
Between its cosy optimism and quietly revolutionary LGBTQ+ representation, Heartstopper has become one of Netflix’s most popular shows in recent years.
Based on the graphic novels by Alice Oseman, the romantic comedy-drama follows teenager Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) as he navigates his sexuality and falls in love with his sporty classmate Nick Nelson (Kit Connor).
Other cast members include William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Sebastian Croft, and Olivia Colman.
After the first season debuted in April 2022 to critical and commercial success, Netflix renewed the show for an additional two seasons.
Is Heartstopper season 4 confirmed?
At the time of writing (October 3), Netflix has not renewed Heartstopper for a fourth season. Considering the show’s popularity, low budget, and the upcoming sixth volume in the graphic novel series though, it seems likely that the show will return.
Could a potential season 4 be the final season?
If Netflix decides to renew the show, creator Alice Oseman has said it would end with season four. The author is currently working on the final sixth volume in the graphic novel series, which will form the basis of any potential fourth season.
Oseman clarified the situation in a recent Patreon post, writing: “If we get a fourth season of the show, it will use volume six of Heartstopper and the Nick and Charlie novella as the source material. I am very much hoping that there will be a fourth season, so the show gets to have a proper ending! I’m praying to the gods! Begging on my knees!”
There might be a delay before the show returns, however, as Oseman wants the final book to come out first. “I will most likely be drawing volume six simultaneously while writing the season four scripts, even if we haven’t been renewed,” she added.
“And the other thing that I have to keep in mind is that I really, extremely, devoutly need the volume six book to come out before season four comes out, so people experience the end of the story from the books first. So there’s a timer counting down now.”
Have the cast said anything about season 4?
In an interview with NME, Joe Locke explained how he treats every season of Heartstopper like it’s the last.
“There are so many moving parts and everyone’s so busy,” Locke said when asked about a fourth season. “For now, we’re just kind of trying to enjoy what we have made. Every time we go back [to Heartstopper], it’s like, ‘Well, this could be it.'”
