Joe Lycett announces he has become a father to a baby boy
Comedian Joe Lycett has announced on social media that he has become a father to a new baby boy.
The stand-up, 36, who has become known in recent years for his politically-motivated public pranks, posted a photograph of himself apparently holding his new son, alongside a message of thanks to the Birmingham Women’s Hospital.
“An appreciation post from me for the extraordinary @bham_womens hospital,” he wrote in the Instagram caption. “My first encounter with them was years ago when they looked after a pal of mine through surgery, and then most recently when they masterfully welcomed a little boy into the world, who happens to be my son.”
He continued: “The care and compassion his mum and he received was exceptional; from the antenatal classes, incredible midwives, consultants, doctors, nurses and the ongoing care in the community. We also loved their baked potatoes. Birmingham is so lucky to have them and I will be forever grateful for everything they’ve done.”
Lycett, who grew up in Birmingham, can often leave audiences guessing whether his words can be taken literally – as evidenced when he “outed” himself as being “very right wing” while on the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg in 2022 – but it is thought this time he is being genuine.
“I am LOVING being a dad but sadly I think this now means I can’t get out of going on Rob and Josh’s fucking podcast,” he added, referring to Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe’s Parenting Hell.
“We will not be taking any press requests about this as we have already sold the rights to the first family picture to Autotrader,” he quipped.
In August, Lycett trolled Reform UK leader Nigel Farage in the wake of the race riots across the UK. “Babe, you are having SUCH a brat summer!” he wrote. “Totally loving everything you’re up to right now, especially your social media posts with those gorgey flags!”
Lycett has previously taken aim at other politicians, including Liz Truss and Suella Braverman, and has also brought attention to the UK’s alarming sewage spill problems.
