John Oliver wasn’t allowed to finish tribute to his dead dog at Emmys
John Oliver gave a hilarious speech in tribute to his dead dog at the Emmys last night (September 15).
As he accepted the award for Outstanding Scripting for a Variety Series for his show Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, he paid tribute to the production team and his family, before he went off on a ramble about his dog at the Peacock Theater.
“I also want to thank, and this is going to be very silly, our dog,” he said. “We had the most fantastic dog. She was at our wedding, she got us through a pandemic, and was with us for two pregnancies.”
As orchestral music rang out for Oliver to wrap up, he said: “Perfect choice of music! Because we had to say goodbye to her.
“She was an amazing dog. This isn’t just for her, this is for all dogs. You’re all very good girls, very good boys, you all deserve a treat. Play me off now!”
Last Week Tonight has now won over 30 Emmy Awards since it first aired in 2014, 16 of which have been awarded to Oliver.
His wasn’t the only amusing moment at last night’s ceremony. Viewers were also calling for the cast of Only Murders In The Building to host next year’s Oscars after their hilarious intro for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
“The Emmy Awards what a magical evening it’s been trying to remember people’s names,” said Selena Gomez before Martin Short interjected: “And pretending that we’ve seen their shows.”
“And when I see an actor I don’t know, I just say ‘I love your scene with Nicole Kidman.'” Steve Martin added.
The big winners on the night were Shōgun and The Bear with the former walking away with 18 wins – shattering the record for the most nominated and most awarded single-season drama series ever. Among the awards won by Shōgun are Best Drama Series, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series and Best Directing for a Drama Series.
The latter meanwhile, also set a record for the most nominated comedy series in a year with 23 nods – winning 11 trophies including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Writing, Best Directing and more.
Meanwhile, Hacks scored the largest upset of the night, beating out crowd favourite The Bear for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Baby Reindeer also took home several big awards, including Outstanding Writing in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Outstanding Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Show creator Richard Gadd also shared an inspiring and emotional speech.
