Kate Hudson on turning down lead role in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’: “I should’ve made it happen”

Kate Hudson has reflected on turning down the lead role in The Devil Wears Prada, saying she “should’ve made it happen”.

During a recent interview with Capital Breakfast, the How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days actress was asked which role she most regretted turning down, to which she immediately mentioned the ever-popular 2006 comedy, which has since spawned a musical reimagining co-written by Elton John.

Before Anne Hathaway was cast as budding journalist Andy Sachs in the film adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel, director David Frankel reportedly met with the likes of Rachel McAdams, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst, with Hudson saying it was a scheduling issue that stopped her from starring in it.

“That was a bad call,” she admitted. “It was a timing thing, it was one of those things where I couldn’t do it, and I should’ve made it happen, and I didn’t. That was one where when I saw it I was like, ‘Ugh.'”

While the Dazed and Confused star maintained that “everything happens for a reason,” she still admitted that she “should’ve made that work.” The film went on to become a box office hit with $327 million and earned two Oscars, and is still amongst some of Hathaway’s most iconic roles.

“It’s funny. It’s waves of things that are happening and people shooting at different times,” Hudson said. “It’s not like you don’t do them because you don’t want to do them. It’s like, ‘Oh, you’re doing something else.’ And it just sucked, you know?”

Hathaway had previously revealed that she was the ninth choice to play Sachs, making the revelation during an appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race while she served as a guest judge.

“I will give you some tea, I was the ninth choice for Devil Wears Prada,” she said. “But I got it! Hang in there, never give up.”

Meanwhile, as was reported by Puck last year, a sequel to the fashion-focused comedy-drama is supposedly moving forward, with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt returning to reprise their roles as Miranda Priestly and Emily Charlton accordingly. Notably, Hathaway will not be returning.
