The Game Boy was released in Japan in 1989 before becoming a world-wide phenomenon the following year. The handheld console launched with Tetris and Super Mario Land but also hosted classic titles like The Legend Of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Donkey Kong and Pokémon Red & Blue.
A reworked Game Boy Color console was released in 1998 and the handheld consoles remain one of the best-selling consoles of all time, shifting more than 118million units.
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Game Boy’s global launch, LEGO are releasing a new, buildable model of the console. A short teaser was shared yesterday (January 9) alongside the simple caption “build the classic Nintendo system in LEGO form. Coming October 2025”. No further details have been released.

The LEGO Game Boy is the latest collab between LEGO and Nintendo. Last year, the first The Legend Of Zelda set was confirmed, while several Mario and Animal Crossing products have been released in recent years. Classic consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System, a Pac-Man-inspired arcade machine and the Atari 2600 have also been released.
Of course, a LEGO Game Boy isn’t the console most Nintendo fans were waiting for. The successor to the Switch is due to be announced at some point before the conclusion of the current financial year, which ends March 31. So far, the only details Nintendo has shared about the new console is that it will be backwards compatible with existing Switch titles.
However several images of the Switch 2 have reportedly leaked in recent weeks, with fans expecting a bigger, more powerful console.
Earlier this week, one fan got so frustrated by the wait for news, they turned to tarot to find out when the Switch 2 will be announced with the cards suggesting it’s coming “soon”.
In other news, today’s Marvel Rivals season one update has made changes to 24 different heroes in an attempt to better balance combat. Two new characters from The Fantastic Four have also been added to the hero-shooter alongside two new maps.
