Listen to Banks’ brooding new single ‘Love Is Unkind’

Banks has shared the latest single from her upcoming fifth album, in the form of ‘Love Is Unkind’ – listen below.

The singer-songwriter is set to release her fifth studio record ‘Off With Her Head’ on February 28, the follow-up to 2022’s ‘Serpentina’. She has already previewed the album with the singles ‘Best Friends’ and ‘I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend’, which featured Doechii. Pre-order the album here.

Now, fans can hear the latest taste of the album with ‘Love Is Unkind’, which Banks has said is “about an emotionally dangerous relationship that had me running around in circles”.

Listen to the brooding, synth-heavy track here:

“It’s about how love can be unkind and masochistic,” Banks has also said about the song. “Rewinding your memory and seeing things clearly.”

Describing what fans can expect from the new record, she added: “In many ways, it’s a big sister album to ‘Goddess’ [2014]. After a decade apart, I’ve reunited with the core musicians and producers who helped shape my debut. At the same time, it’s something entirely different— I’ve grown so much as an artist and a person, and the journey is documented in all these sounds.”

The ‘Off With Her Head’ tracklist is:

‘Guillotine’
‘I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend ft. Doechii’
‘Love Is Unkind’
‘Delulu’
‘Move’
‘Stay’
‘Best Friends’
‘Meddle In The Mold’
‘Direction’
‘Make It Up’
‘River’
‘Off With Her Head’

Banks released an acoustic version of her debut album ‘Goddess’ in December, to mark the record’s 10-year anniversary. She also celebrated with special intimate shows in London, New York, and Los Angeles – taking to the same original venues she visited upon the initial release.

NME awarded Banks’ last album ‘Serpentina’ four stars, writing: “‘Serpentina’ is a welcome reintroduction to the artist and a cathartic ode to doing things your own way. Midway through ‘Spirit’, she sings: “Fuck anyone who tells you you cant do it / You don’t need it”. Listening to ‘Serpentina’, you sense that Banks’ has confidently taken her own advice.”
