The Sudanese-Canadian singer-songwriter is on this week’s (October 21) edition of The Cover, a renewal of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read the profile of Mustafa here, written by Cordelia Lam and featuring photography by Stella Gigliotti.
The Cover is accompanied by an exclusive playlist, titled ‘Kitaba’, compiled by Mustafa. It features a selection of songs by Neil Young, Sami Yusuf, Sufjan Stevens, Fairouz, and Future. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.
In his Cover story, Mustafa, who is now primarily LA-based, tells NME about his relationship with his hometown of Toronto. “I hate that I can’t live there anymore,” he says. “People in that city have threatened my family’s lives and made good on those threats. The police and judicial system there have consistently rendered my community invisible. And to be clear, that’s not been the fault of the system. It’s the function of the system.”
The artist also discusses his new album ‘Dunya’, some of his experiences in the music industry and his journey with his faith. “The search for my faith is exactly why I’m making this music,” he shares. “If I had figured out my relationship to Islam, there wouldn’t be an album.”
