Listen to The Horrors “driving and direct” new single ‘More Than Life’
The Horrors have shared an anthemic new single called ‘More Than Life’ – check it out below.
The track marks the fourth and latest single to be taken from the group’s upcoming album ‘Night Life’. Set for release on March 21 via Fiction, it will mark their sixth LP and come as they approach their 20th anniversary. Visit here to pre-order.
With ‘More Than Life’, Faris Badwan and co. continue to enter a new chapter in The Horrors’ discography and create a powerful and anthemic feel.
“Are we losing touch/ With all the things we care about?/ Have we come undone?/ Is there no way to turn around?/ You’re always in disguise/ But are you ever satisfied?” the frontman croons in the reflective opening verse, surrounded by swirling, otherworldly instrumentals.
“And even though I know you give yourself to someone else/ I wish I had you here tonight.” Check it out below.
Speaking about the new track, the band explained that they wanted the song to capture a different perspective of the album compared to the other recent singles.
“‘More Than Life’ has a different type of intensity to our recent singles, it’s more driving and direct. It was written in the middle of Canary Wharf, which looks more like Blade Runner everyday. It’s such a strange place to do anything creative as the surroundings feel particularly stark,” they said.
“We still needed a couple more songs for the album before going to LA to record at Yves’ studio, and we were in that insular part of the process where it feels like the outside world doesn’t exist. The song is basically about the question of what matters to you and by that point we were definitely clear on where we were heading.”
The upcoming album arrives as the band are approaching their 20th year together, and is set to see them capture a new “sonic” outlook.
It will also see the core duo – vocalist Faris Badwan and bassist Rhys Webb – now join up with Amelia Kidd on the keys and Telegram’s Jordan Cook on drums. This makes the forthcoming record the first to not feature all five original members.
“The resulting album is a record of weight and space, of melancholy and euphoria; a record that has the ability to make bedfellows of seemingly disparate ideas as only The Horrors can,” reads a press description of the LP. “The ‘Night Life’ here is not the vim and vigour of pubs and clubs. It’s the thoughts that happen under the cover of darkness; the places your mind takes you when the rest of the world is asleep. A record born out of a desire to revive the raw, instinctive spirit of the band’s early work.”
Demos for the new songs began in Webb’s basement flat in North London, before starting to fully take shape in Los Angeles alongside producer Yves Rothman. Finishing touches were added back in London, with Kidd bouncing parts and production ideas remotely from Glasgow.
The news of the line-up change comes after the Southend band announced back in 2021 that they would be going forward as a four-piece, confirming that keyboardist Tom Furse would be taking a break from performing. At the time, Furse shared a statement explaining that touring life isn’t really for him, and that he’s “more of a maker than a performer”.
The original line-up included vocalist Badwan, guitarist Hayward, keyboardist Furse, bassist Webb and drummer Joe Spurgeon.
Before they began sharing the singles from the upcoming record, The Horrors had not released any new music since the three-track EP ‘Against The Blade’ in November 2021, which followed on from the ‘Lout’ EP that same year.
Later this year, the band will play Dot To Dot Festival in Bristol and Nottingham, alongside the likes of Fat Dog, Sprints, Big Special, Honeyglaze, Kate Bollinger, Låpsley and Nimino.
