Listen to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ Boys Noize remix of ‘Challengers’ score
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have enlisted Boys Noize to remix their score for the upcoming feature film Challengers – listen to the half-hour mix below.
The celebrated German producer and DJ Boys Noize has been hand-selected by Reznor and Ross to “deconstruct and subsequently reimagine” their propulsive, electronic score, and the new version mixes nine tracks into one continuous set.
Listen to ‘Challengers [Mixed]’ below:
Challengers is the latest film from director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All), and stars Zendaya as a former tennis prodigy turned coach who tries to redeem her husband’s (The Crown’s Josh O’Connor) losing streak when he takes on her ex-boyfriend. The film is out on April 26.
Speaking about his new mix of the score, Boys Noize has said: “It’s been a fun challenge to turn this into one fluid experience and take it even further by redesigning the tracks, creating new elements and changing certain parts – especially on ‘Compress / Repress,’ which turns super epic in the end. Working with Trent and Atticus has been a dream come true; they’ve been so great and helpful during the entire process.”
Reznor opened up earlier this week on why he apologised to his record label when he handed in Nine Inch Nails’ ‘The Downward Spiral’.
“I felt the record was so uncompromising, ‘The Downward Spiral’,” he said. “It was an album that I needed to make but it wasn’t reactive to ‘Fuck you, forgive me but I’ll show you.’ I remember I turned it in and I said, ‘Sorry. You shouldn’t have let me do what I was going to do’.”
Reznor and Ross have also spoken about plans for a new album, with Ross stating: I do feel excited about starting on the next record. I think we’re in a place now where we kind of have an idea.”
The duo also revealed that they are working on a TV series with The Bear creator Christopher Storer and a movie with horror director Mike Flanagan. They are also venturing into the world of fashion with an upcoming T-shirt line with an unnamed designer which will arrive later this summer.
In other news, Reznor recently hit out against streaming, saying it has “mortally wounded” many artists.
“I think the terrible payout of streaming services has mortally wounded a whole tier of artists that make being an artist unsustainable,” he told GQ.
He continued: “And it’s great if you’re Drake, and it’s not great if you’re Grizzly Bear. And the reality is: Take a look around. We’ve had enough time for the whole ‘All the boats rise’ argument to see they don’t all rise. Those boats rise. These boats don’t. They can’t make money in any means. And I think that’s bad for art.”
