Machine Gun Kelly says he is one year “completely sober”
Machine Gun Kelly has announced he is one year “completely sober”.
The rapper and singer (real name Colson Baker) made the revelation on Bonnie XO’s Dumb Blonde podcast, after appearing alongside her and her husband Jelly Roll in their most recent collaboration, ‘Lonely Road’.
In the podcast (as per Rolling Stone), Kelly said: “I’m completely sober from everything. I don’t drink anymore. I haven’t drank since last August.” The musician also said he went to rehab after the conclusion of his European tour in 2023, adding: “I didn’t tell anybody outside of the [people] closest to me,” he said.
“That was my first time I ever went to rehab. They just gave me so many ways to operate the body, show where this anger is coming from, and methods to quell it.”
MGK also revealed he met psychiatrists and therapists during his time in rehab, saying some “gave up on me”. “But I ended up falling into an awareness of what my condition is and have made peace with it,” he continued. “It’s a constant tightrope walk.”
The musician also credited girlfriend Megan Fox for helping him on his journey to sobriety, adding: “Megan has for sure been extremely helpful in dealing with the kind of psychological withdrawals that come with [sobriety].”
“I continue to embrace that this journey is gonna be hard for me, but I accept it and forgive myself,” Kelly added. He went on to admit that “I’m also really hard on myself, very self-deprecating.
“So, I guess, I’m just happy that I’m able to start to be comfortable enough to show people who I am, because I kind of depended on my art to do that.”
In the same interview, Kelly opened up about the strained relationship between himself and his mother, who left the family when Kelly was just nine years old.
Kelly explained: “I would like to say for the record, I love my mom dearly and I misrepresented her a lot early in my career. And not misrepresented in the sense of not speaking truth. I was speaking my truth, but I didn’t give the masses the chance to understand her truth.”
He has since reconciled with his mother, posted a picture of the two of them side by side on Instagram in 2022 with the caption: “Introducing my mom”.
